TBS 5th Grade Curriculum
English Language Arts
Students will have Reader’s Workshop this year. This class will focus on skills, book groups, and Reader’s Workshop. One of the biggest changes with the Common Core State Standards in Language Arts is the increased emphasis on non-fiction reading and cross-curricular reading. This means that we will focus even more on reading in subjects like science and social studies as well. Like most subjects, the curriculum has changed and is still in the process of being written. Reading will incorporate social studies so all the history students cover will be taught through language arts. Reading - Uncovering Meaning and Message in Literature, Finding Information to Explore and Support Idea, Using Persuasion, Expressing Ourselves Aloud, Examining Language and Aesthetic Elements & Studying the Craft of Persuasion. Writing - Personal Narrative: Dialogue, Description and Events, Compare/Contrast: Supporting Ideas with Information, Persuasive: Persuading Readers in Writing, Biography- The Power of Biography, Poetry/Drama-Performance, Poetry and Drama, Research/Persuasion- Research for Persuasive Argument. |
Math
In 2012-2013, Avon used the Everyday Math program for grades K-5. In late August 2013, it was decided that Avon would no longer be using Everyday Math. This past school year (2013-2014), the new curriculum was implemented. The new curriculum was put into place throughout all grade levels in Avon. In fifth grade, there is no longer any commercial math program – it is teacher created. Teachers worked to write both curriculum and assessments throughout the past school year using the Grade 5 Common Core State Standards as the guiding force. This process will continue this school year as well. While the curriculum is a living document (and will be adjusted throughout the year), it will most likely be very similar to what is listed below. Do not refer to this list (scroll down) as exactly what will be taught or what order it will be taught in, but feel free to use it as a guide to general topics students will cover this year. Math Units of Study: Problem Solving Strategies, Place Value, Multiplication & Expressions, Dividing Whole Numbers, Add & Subtract Decimals, Multiply & Divide Decimals, Add & Subtract Fractions with Unlike Denominators, Multiply & Divide Fractions, Geometry & Volume, Algebraic Patterns, Graphing & Converting Units of Measure. (OA) Operations and Algebraic Thinking, (NBT) Numbers and Operations in Base Ten, (NF) Number and Operations - Fractions, (MD) Measurement and Data, (G) Geometry |
Social Studies (Fully integrated with Language Arts)
The 5th grade Social Studies program focuses on the concept of nation, and centers on the founding of the United States. Students study the following themes: exploration, settlement and colonization of North America; the American Revolution; the United States Constitution. European exploration and settlement in North America is followed by a more specific study of the similarities and differences of the 13 British colonies along the Atlantic seaboard. Examination of the escalation of discord between Britain and its colonies culminates in study of the Declaration of Independence and the establishment of the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights. The five themes of geography and appreciation of differing cultures are two threads running through the curriculum. Critical and organizational thinking are encouraged through exercises in sequencing, cause-and-effect, and both inferential and deductive reasoning. Students also make connections between the past and present through current events as they relate to historical concepts, events and figures. Historical studies are supplemented by studies of United States icons, such as presidents, national parks and notable landmarks.
