Hello, my name is Megan Spencer. This coming fall at Thompson Brook will be my 15th year of teaching! I have had the opportunity to teach at every elementary grade level, K-6, except for kindergarten! In Avon, I was a teacher at Roaring Brook Elementary and taught 2nd grade and 4th grade before coming to Thompson Brook. I am both classroom and special education certified and taught special education in Enfield. I'm looking forward to meeting all of you and all of the new challenges in the year to come.
I grew up in a town named Katy outside of Houston, TX - hometown to Clint Black, Renee Zellweger & American Idol Kimberly Caldwell! I had horses, rode horses, loved living there & still miss it from time to time. I actually got to go back and visit my elementary and middle schools this summer, it was wonderful! I moved to Enfield CT when I was in high school (Enrico Fermi HS) & went onto undergraduate college at Westfield State College and graduate school at Nazareth College in Rochester, NY. In Rochester I also worked for the Center for Autism & Related Disorders and their ABA program. I've had the opportunity to work students in grades K-6 with a variety of abilities. My 3rd grade student teaching placement was the one that inspired me to be a classroom teacher. You can visit the teacher who inspired me at her website, www.gateschili.org/webpages/swierk! I was very fortunate to be placed in a classroom as nurturing and open as Mrs. Swierk's - thank you. After teaching in Avon for a number of years we began working with the FlippenGroup, out of College Station, TX, and began implementing Capturing Kids Hearts in our school district. Since then I have begun traveling for the FlippenGroup in the summer to share the great parts of the CKH process.
My husband and I have 2 sons, our oldest, named Evan, is literally our little angel & our 10 year old son Aidan. My family & are very Irish, I was born a Murphy! I can't wait for St. Patrick's Day to share some of my favorite stories by Tomie D'Paola and some other really fun & tasty activities!
When I'm not in school I'm always busy with something. We love to travel, spending time at Barnes & Noble, working on and around our house but one of the things we love to do the most is sitting as a family and watching the Red Sox play! GO SOX! Aidan has adopted our love for the Sox and cheers them on heartily. This past year we had the amazing opportunity to travel to Ireland! We got to visit some of the most classic, historical sites in the world! Trinity College & the Book of Kells, Blarney Castle, Rock of Cashel and the Cliffs of Moher to name a few. It was a beautiful, breathtaking experience and I encourage you all to explore, be brave and travel the world! We are also big fans of music - any and all types, our musical taste is very eclectic. We also volunteer with different charities - March of Dimes, Children's Miracle Network and the American Cancer Society just to name a couple. In the past years RBS & TBS have supported the March of Dimes through Reading Champions, in memory of my son Evan and to help all babies & their mothers.
Thank you for finding out more about me and my family! I'm truly looking forward to this school year - I think that we are going to learn a lot and have a lot of fun doing it. Check out my slideshow of family photo-fun below! I'll see you in the classroom!
